A Song For Ya

by Royal Oak

/

about

A Song For Ya is a true-life tale of heartbreak told through a high-gloss, pop-punk-inspired lens. Conceptualized after a mid-tour breakup, the lyrics tread a fine line between two familiar feelings: Anger because it ended, and relief because it’s over.

These themes come through in the music, too. The verses offer vulnerable, electropop-leaning moments punctuated with a bouncy bass synth and glitchy video game noises. When the choruses hit, they explode with chunky guitars, driving bass and drums, and call-and-response assurances that “I’m already over it.”

A reflective piano-led bridge moves seamlessly into a fuzzed-out guitar solo that brings the song home to a soaring double chorus. At 3:13, A Song For Ya is long enough to satisfy but short enough to demand another playthrough.

Written and produced over Zoom during the height of lockdowns, A Song For Ya hits the perfect balance between “hooky enough to sing” and “brash enough to mosh to.”

lyrics

Last summer when your heart broke
And you left for San Francisco I was
Heading out on the long road
Had a show in Toronto
And you were messing around (messing around)
Breaking me down (breaking me down)
What the hell were you thinking?
Did a lot of damage in a weekend

Got a call in the morning
Could’ve given me a warning now you’re
Telling me how ya fucked up
Fooled me once now I’m too numb
To let it happen again (happen again)
Better as friends? (What’s in your head?)
Tell me now, are you happy?
Bet you’re gonna wish that you could have me

Now you’re stuck with a memory
Like you can’t get rid of me
I’m already over it
I’m already over it
And all my friends back home would say
They never really liked you anyway
I’m already over it
I’m already over it

So you said you want the back pain now did you?
Could’ve killed me with a look but you never did, no
All the rights, all the wrongs
Was it ever worth it?
Every stupid little secret that surfaced
You thought you left me with a heartache?
No you didn’t
You gave me shit cause I never wrote a song for ya
Well tell me how you like this one

Now you’re stuck with a memory
Like you can’t get rid of me
I’m already over it
I’m already over it
And all my friends back home would say
They never really liked you anyway
I’m already over it
I’m already over it

I been thinking bout the last time we were drinking cheap wine endlessly
After all the shit we’d been through
It was funny how we both knew
You’d give up so easily

Now you’re stuck with a memory
Like you can’t get rid of me
I’m already over it
I’m already over it
And all my friends back home would say
They never really liked you anyway
I’m already over it
I’m already over it

Now you’re stuck with a memory
Like you can’t get rid of me
I’m already over it
I’m already over it
(I’m already over it)
And all my friends back home would say
(All my friends)
They never really liked you anyway
I’m already over it
I’m already over it
Yeah
